After last week’s stack about ‘How Lawyers Get Us’ I bumped another stack to add this to the narrative. With July 4th aka America’s Birthday this week I figured why not connect to that. In this game (life) we are in this quote from one of the ‘Founding Fathers’ of what was to become the U.S.A would be the perfect segue way.
In this time period we are in the law has been weaponized by recent events that are in the media. The law is not to be used as a weapon but in this post covid apparatus the law is fair game to be used as such. This is a conversation that many depending on there political affiliation will vehemently disagree with or wholeheartedly agree. We are not here for that. We are here for the next paragraph.
John Adams wrote to friends apparently about the relationship between government and the law! Here is what he said:
A Republic, he wrote, is an EMPIRE OF LAWS and not of men; and therefore…..that particular arrangement……. Which is best calculated to secure an exact and impartial execution of the laws, is the best Republic.
Please pause here digest. Did you see the word democracy? No you didn’t. So why do we hear many politicians in America refer to this country as a democracy? I hope you press pause and go hmm? We must stop and say what is the significance of those two words and how they impact our daily life.
For me it is so obvious or better put by much better ‘wordologists’ than myself ……. Would say self evident. When you hear individuals say the ‘rule of law’ they are not speaking of using law as a blunt instrument against the people. If Mr. Adams could come back to life now he would be very disappointed in what this country has done with the rule of law. He would also realize that we are not in a Republic.
Here is another bold statement that was said by the nation’s first President:
A free people ought not only be armed and disciplined, But they should have sufficient arms and ammunition to maintain a status of independence from any who might attempt to abuse them. Which would include their own government. GEORGE WASHINGTON
To close this out, I will paraphrase because I do not have the quote in front of me of what Mr. Benjamin Franklin said during the Constitution Convention. The individual asked him what do we have…….. Here is what Mr. Franklin has purported to have said:
A REPUBLIC IF WE CAN KEEP IT!
He did not say a democracy if we can keep it. Have a wonderful 4th of July if you are here in the States! Shoot off some fireworks. It is birthday 248 for this baby of a country. The USA is so young compared to other nations on the planet. Until the next episode……

Now what will your mind allow you to do?
The most beautiful thing about our beautiful Constitution is the separation of powers, both horizontally between branches and vertically (federalism). As Lord Acton said, power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely. It has become the job of thinking people to force a mirror into the hands of the unthinking masses who would unwittingly vote for more of what we have now.
People should pick up a copy of the Federalist Papers and (re?)gain some understanding of what we were founded to be. Spoiler alert - the founders did not have a polyglot dystopian shithole in mind.
Let’s work together to reclaim our constitutional Republic from its thieves. We are a constitutionally limited representative Democratic Republic with a communist infestation in full swing. Our founders wrote of the dangers of mob rule in a direct democracy. I also cringe when people call the United States a democracy. Thanks for your article.
We have been using some words for so long that we do not remember what they actually mean. Democracy and Republic are heading that list. The extract you have found on the Republic being an "EMPIRE OF LAWS" is extremely powerful. That's not what we have been told but that's what we are living. And I don't mean here the USA but the whole not very "democractic" world.
