Growing up in the 1970’s and 1980’s for the most part you trusted corporations. You took what was said to you at face value. Their reputation was critical to said business. You felt you knew what was what! You knew what to expect. At that time the appearance of caring about the customer/consumer was front and center. That was where the money was coming from…. the consumer. The Ceo’s were from WW2 era. There was a distinction. America was America. You knew where you stood within the equation for the most part. There was trust even in what would be viewed as a negative cynical world. You still felt business cared more for the consumer than now.
There was always hyperbole in advertising even then, but you felt you could trust what was said and told to you by the corporations. You could trust the ingredients because no business wanted their product rejected or considered not up to standard. That could be very costly to their bottom line as a corporation. You didn’t want to end up on the news because it would be very scandalous! There was still competition left in economy. The economy still had the bedrock of capitalism underneath it. In this time, we have the bedrock of communism underneath it. There was a symmetry that I do not see in our current time.
In 1983-84 I decided to become part of Green Peace. I was concerned about the environment as most young conscious and searching for something to hold on to as many coming of age young folks usually are. I wished to become part of the solution not just feed the problem. When I got involved, I saw it was about more about the money and politics than the environment. I can also recall when recycling was coming onboard. I can recall when the American car industry lost its luster to the first wave of Japanese cars and Detroit started to decline. The American car bosses were sleeping on the job. I feel as they didn’t, I guess want to believe the change had come. The consumer had spoken but no one listened from there perch. The car industry never was the same. The market had changed from big and gas guzzler to small with gas efficiency.
I can remember when there was just health food and what my mother called ‘‘junk food’’…lol. Man, we had to jump through hoops to get that junk food. There was no vegan or plant-based balderdash. Those are marketing terms. This is all just marketing ‘‘gooliboop’’to me. For me is the food clean or not! Is the food tampered with aka GMO or not. Let’s cut to the chase! I will refuse to believe that man made food is better and more nutritious than nature’s bounty. I can remember the chickens and beef before industrialization took full hold. I remember going to the butcher. When it was food not products. Industrialization under the guise of convenience commenced the compromise. Does this script sound familiar?
I laugh at all of these terms that are out in the marketplace such as ‘‘grass fed’’! What else is there for them to eat? Now grass fed is considered a premium product. Openly yet subliminally we are being told that what we are getting is sub-par product right in our faces. Now organic is premium when seventy years ago it was all what is called organic. It was regular because it was just that way before the consistent compromise aka convenience was commenced.
I wish to pose then what have we been eating from the supermarkets especially in the last forty years? What have we been getting from the medical field since 1986? What type of healthcare have we been getting? What have been in the over counter medicine for the last forty years? When did all this corporate compromise behavior raise its ugly head?
There can be no more assumptions left when it comes to any corporate products. I will reference a 1970’s classic show now on reruns somewhere on cable TV called the Odd Couple starring Jack Klugman as Oscar Madison and Tony Randall as Felix Unger. In this particular episode the two of them end up in court over a frivolous matter that is important to Felix but not to Oscar! To make the point very clear Felix dials in on a sentence that Oscar said! Oscar say’s he assumes….and Felix goes into fall attack mode! Felix isolates on the word ‘‘assume’’ and commences to breaking the word down! He say’s to Oscar and to the court while using a chalkboard in a challenging tone that when assume……YOU MAKE AN ASS-OUT-OF-YOU-AND-ME! Hence, we can no longer assume what we are getting from any corporation via a product that historically was considered healthy or good for you. It can’t be considered clean!
Depending how long you have been on this earth you can’t just assume because the product has traditionally been considered healthy that it may not have been compromised in this age, we live in. I will just keep it just to one product! However, I am not singling out this product. This was a random event because I just decided to read the ingredients as I had not bought this product in many years! During this summer of 2022 I am counting dollars because I do not have a consistent income as I complete various projects that I am executing that shall define and impact the times ahead on a professional level. I am eating fruit and yogurt for breakfast and lunch daily. I always attempt to purchase the quote unquote best but sometimes you make a compromise in the hustle of it all……. lol! I picked up a Yō Plait yogurt. I only eat vanilla or plain. I am sitting down in fact writing this essay which was executed in two parts just so you understand. I was frozen on how to complete it.
I decide to read the ingredients as I open the yogurt……just killing time as you do at times. Here are the ingredients: vanilla culturized pasteurized grade A low fat milk, water, sugar, nonfat milk solids, high fructose corn syrup, modified corn starch, fructose, Kosher Gelatin, Natural flavors, Citric Acid, Amato color, Vitamin A palmitate, Vitamin B3. I was knocked out that it was four sources of sugar in a quote unquote yogurt which is presented as a respectful healthy food source. Also, it said genetically modified organism was in this little cup of yogurt. It made me pause and reflect.
Let’s now deliberate if diabetes is growing rampantly why is there four sources of sugar in this yogurt? You then extrapolate now all of the foods we eat unconsciously; you then have to say to yourself OMG! You eat like this for decades so what do you expect to happen to our bodies? Obesity is what you can expect, and your organs being attacked via this methodology. We pay for our own demise.
I am stating here and now we are living in a very questionable society that needs to be addressed by each individual as a starting point to deliberate on when they have free time. This should be done asap. All I can say are these two words…. corporate and compromised! Now what will your mind allow you to do.
