I am stating here that we are in an objectivity crisis! Objectivity was the goal in life so we can see with clarity but more importantly move with clarity in our life in order to succeed in this thing called life. However, with the increase of this ‘‘me first world’’ subjectivity has soundly defeated objectivity.
Let’s jump to the definitions of the two so we can be as clear as possible:
Subjectivity - The quality of being based on or influenced by personal feelings, tastes or opinions. 2) The quality of existing in someone’s mind rather than the external world. 3) Perception comes a subject’s point of view only.
objectivity - Freedom from bias. 2) base their opinions on facts rather than personal feelings. 3) Neutral or detached.
With the increase of social media perception has become a daily exercise of ‘‘subjective facts’’. We are being led by our feelings in this updated society. We are now in the time of ‘‘my feelings’’. The key is my! If ‘‘my’’ is the lead, then our objectivity will be toast and that is why I said social media has led us here. For example, say you walk up on a fight, and you saw the one person quote unquote throw the first punch you feel you saw the truth fact. Yet right before you turned the corner the other party may have slapped the person you saw ‘‘throw the first punch! We made a subjective call, yet we thought we were objective. We reacted with our emotions not necessarily the way we needed to be which would be objectively to find out how the situation got there in the first place.
Also, in this ongoing fight for attention it is so much easier to be subjective versus objective because objectivity takes much more time. Objectivity takes up more of your time because you have to think and deliberate. You do not make the fast decision! Objectivity is a granular action because it allows the individual to seek out what may be intangibles that can be lost making hasty subjective decisions. No what will your mind allow you to do?
