What is the point of school now
I saw this poll in the many things that come across my eyes during the week and just stopped when I truly digested the verbiage. It made me think back to my own schooling back in the dark ages! I mean are we expanding minds anymore or it is just about creating a one track mind? School is about expanding the mind not limiting it.
Here was the poll: Should teachers be sharing and discussing their political opinions with their students.
Yes - Teachers should share their politics if it encourages students to pursue social justice and activism.
No - They should be teaching non politicized, age appropriate, foundational knowledge to children.
First what is foundational knowledge!? The verbiage is all wrong! It is limiting to say the least. I can remember when my teachers from 7th grade onward opened the forum to here thoughts. They explained their politics but it was not forced upon us. They explained many sides of the political equation. They also discussed how they changed their politics as they got older or was put in a situation that made them change. I can remember critical teachers who I still refer back to at this stage in my life. Talking many decades now. They were teaching not indoctrinating!
When I see the word social justice that is code for communist/socialist. This leads us down a path which is one dimensional. It sounds good but it is philosophically one dimensional which school is not suppose to be about. We must stop this coded indoctrination and let teachers go back to being educators not indoctrinators. The sad part it will take many decades. The goal of school is bring about a well rounded set of individuals ready to add to societies progress! Well it use to be! I went to public school throughout my life. Something has been changed hasn’t it.!
