We as a species are experiencing the most prominent, distinguishable, substantial, pronounced, sizeable, significant, and august migration since the 1990’s. We do not view it maybe as such a migration, but I will in the sentences ahead will explain it as such. Usually, migrations have meant packing up and picking yourself up to move. Mentally we think trains, planes, buses, and automobiles. However, this migration for the most part we have not moved physically. We maybe in the same house, apartment, neighborhood, city, state or country. Yet it has been all of those synonyms above for the word great. I will now discuss the great migration first to provide context.
Let’s go to Wikipedia to get the ‘‘official story’’ of the great migration. The great migration. The great migration sometimes known as the great northward migration or ‘‘black migration’’, was the movement of six million African Americans out of the rural southern United States to the urban northeast, Midwest, and the west between 1910 - 1970. It was caused primarily by the economic conditions for the African American people, as well we the prevalent racial segregation and discrimination in the southern states where ‘‘Jim Crow’’ laws were upheld, in particular, continued lynchings motivated a portion of migrants, as African Americans search for social reprieve. The historic change brought about by the migration was amplified because the migrants for the most part, moved to the then largest cities in the United States (New York City, Chicago, Detroit, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Baltimore and Washington, D.C) at the time when those cities had a central cultural, social, political and economic influence over the United States. There, African Americans established influential communities of their own. Despite the loss of leaving their homes in the south, and all of the barriers faced by the migrants in their new homes, the migration was an act of individual and collective agency, which changed the course of American history, a ‘‘declaration of independence’’ written by their actions. This is an incredible story that eventually in my eyes sets up the civil rights break through later in the 1960’s - 1970’s when African Americans had apparently had enough of the ‘‘American way’’ when it came to them.
Now let’s shift to the most distinguishable migration that involves billions of people. It is the ‘‘digital migration’’ that starts in the 1990’s quietly and now thirty years later has taken over the world. The reach of the digital migration is altering the global societal footprint daily. I do not believe that folks see this as a migration because it just slid into culture and greater pop culture without an announcement. Another name could be the ‘‘innovative migration’’.
The internet which was introduced to the masses in the 90’s didn’t make you leave your home. It just slid into your home! All of sudden ‘‘you got mail’’ was baked into pop culture via movies being made surrounding this overt migration. It was all cute yet noneventful. Email changed the communication chain massively. You could now send an email around the quote unquote developed world instead of using a stamp. Please pause and remember the significance of that if you can. In the 00’s the iPhone and the smart phone continued this migration and yet again there was no dramatic physical upheaval. It just slid in people’s pockets. Now in 2022 I consider it an unofficial body part which most cannot do without! This launched what I call the ‘‘addiction economy’’ and what a trillion-dollar economy it has become!! The 10’s brought us the omnipotence of social media which has totally altered the social, psychological, political, and economic streams of thought and being.
These are all migrations! However, do we see them the same as the great migration? Do we consider them a migration? As we go deeper into the 2020’s we are now migrating into the data/bio/cyber and information migration. I have labeled these ‘‘invisible economy’’. Certain so-called elites are predicting what is called the ‘‘great reset’’. In this great reset we are migrating to technology in our body that is hooked up to the internet. This is called I.O.B aka the internet of the body! Others call it transhumanism! Hollywood has prepped the masses for this over the past two decades. Elon Musk and his Nueralink is an example of this. All of this is migration. Facebook and other large communication companies are investing billions in laying sea cables to get the ‘‘dark continent’’ up to par. Getting Africa wired for this ‘‘brave new world’’. This fact will only enlarge this migration from the western perspective. I touched on this topic in my last narrative ‘‘The 2020’s which was published July 2021.
However, what about the quote unquote third world perspective? What about the Chinese perspective? What about from the nation of India’s perspective? My theory is that the flow of the world will be from those areas! This is already being seen culturally by the music genre of Afro Beat being mainstream in many parts of the west. If you pullback the curtain further and look at the Ukrainian War from a ‘‘post-colonial perspective’’ this will open a flood of thoughts. It changes the color of the world metaphorically and literally. We must start looking beyond the obvious narratives.
In my humble opinion, all of this global migration is happening, yet it is quietly taking place or better put the mainstream media is not discussing the impact it will have on people’s life economically, culturally, and geopolitically. Most are staying put in the traditional migration thought process. Beyond a catastrophic event, these events will allow people to stay put in their place and culture. Imagine when they are all connected all of the time? What will that cause? What will this do to the world economy? You better as an individual be processing what was just said.
In closing, it is imperative to fully understand this will be our ‘‘great migration’’ of the 21st century. It will happen and is happening right before our eyes. This 21st century based on the foundation of technology will have planetary ramifications that will impact westerners silently at first before it comes obvious. For the most part westerners will not understand because they will be still listening to their quote unquote political leaders and mainstream media portals. Now what will your mind allow you to do.
